The availability of various CNC machining tools enables CNC machines to perform multiple machining procedures. These tools possess distinct properties that allow them to execute specific operations, significantly reducing the reliance on manual intervention from machine operators. As a result, the issue of machine operators getting tired and potentially damaging the process is eliminated.

The CNC machining tools are categorised into different types, including turning, cutting (milling), drilling, and grinding tools. Among these, the CNC cutting tools are the most extensively utilised.

Dating back to the Egyptian empire, turning is one of the oldest machining procedures. CNC turning tools utilise a lathe (turning machine) that spins the workpiece at high revolutions per minute, while the turning tool shapes the workpiece into the programmed configuration. The workpiece’s shape is determined by the turning procedure and the specific turning tool utilised. Here are some examples of various turning tools: Boring Tools, Chamfering Tools, Knurling Tool, Parting Tool

The CNC cutting tools are widely used in the CNC industry and are often referred to as CNC milling cutters or CNC cutters. Despite being labeled as cutting tools, there is no corresponding cutting procedure in CNC. Instead, the milling procedure is used.

Milling is another popular machining procedure that heavily relies on a broad range of CNC tools to achieve the desired accuracy. CNC milling cutters are utilised with a CNC mill or milling machine, which removes material from various positions on a stationary workpiece in a circular motion.

Here are some examples of cutting tools used in CNC milling: End Mills, Slab Mills, Face Mills, Fly Cutters, Hollow Mills.

Drilling tools, also referred to as drill bits, are utilised by machinists to bore holes in workpieces. These tools operate through the use of twist drills or CNC mills, utilising their flutes and tapered cutting points to create the necessary openings. Some examples of drilling tools include: Center Drills, Ejector Drills, Twist Drills.

When working alongside grinding wheels, grinding tools aid in the process of smoothing a workpiece’s surface. These tools typically possess a high degree of precision. The only type of grinding tool that has been identified thus far is the abrasive grinding wheel.

The machining process, including the feed rate and cutting speed, is determined by the raw material of CNC machine tools. A fundamental principle to follow is that the raw material of the machine tools must be harder than the material of the workpiece. Otherwise, the tool will not be effective for the intended procedure. Presented below are some typical examples of materials employed in the production of machining tools: Carbon Steel, High-Speed Steel, Cemented Carbides, Cutting Ceramics.

The properties of CNC machine tools are influenced by various factors, including the type of coating applied. Coatings play a crucial role in enhancing the tool’s durability, hardness, and ability to withstand elevated temperatures. Some of the commonly used coatings for machine tools are as follows: Titanium Nitride, Chromium Nitride, Aluminium Titanium Nitride, Titanium Carbo Nitride.
